Casino War - A Most Basic Game
The fundamental rules of the game known as casino war are so simple that they must be primitive indeed. The concept of two players each drawing a card to see who draws the highest is something that everyone must have experienced as a child, at some point. In fact, there are historical proofs that demonstrate that the concept well predates the 52 card deck that we use today. The expression 'getting the short end of the stick' might well reflect such a basic lottery based on breaking a stick in two. The Bible describes such a lottery that is supposed to be performed yearly in the Temple. This lottery involved the use of tablets with special markings making it more similar to the card games of today. It is probable that King Saul, when he declared that a lottery be performed to locate the sinner among the people used a similar method of tablets or cards.
A War by Any Other Name
There are several other names for this simple card game. Perhaps this reflects the fact that the game was devised simultaneously in several places and that there is no known specific origin. There are also many variations in existence including rules for jokers, or rules for specific cards that beats aces. The casino war games generally do not use these rules and thus prefer to stick to the classic war game rules.
The First Computerized Casino War
The first instance of a war card game that could be played on a computer was the 'Little Computer People' game for the Apple II. A later version of this game was created in JAVA that could also allow the computer to play against itself for several rounds. This allowed for the creation of a series of initial statistics for the war games that were based on running the program time after time.
